SOKO Kenya’s Multifaceted Approach to Zero Waste

At SOKO Kenya, reducing waste isn’t just an initiative, it’s embedded in everything we do. Through fabric innovation, up-cycling, and community-driven programs, we transform textile waste into something meaningful: new fabric, sewing school materials, and reusable sanitary pads. These efforts not only reduce landfill waste but also generate meaningful social impact. Here’s how we do it:

Fabric Innovation

We repurpose textile waste into new high-quality materials, breathing new life into fabric clippings. A standout example? The Confetti Jacket, created for our client Zuri, was a hit and proof that responsible fashion can be both innovative and beautiful.

Training Materials

Offcuts find a second life at our SOKO Community Trust Stitching Academy, where they are used for practical sewing training. This three-month course equips students with technical skills, life skills, and employability training. To date, over 500 graduates have completed the program, with two-thirds securing employment or starting their own businesses.

Washable Sanitary Pads

Through our Kujuwa Initiative, fabric offcuts are transformed into washable sanitary pads, ensuring access to safe menstrual products while reducing waste. To date, over 30,000 pads have been donated to women and girls in schools alongside menstrual hygiene, sexual reproductive health and rights training. In Kenya, where disposable pads often end up in landfills, waterways, or informal settlements, our reusable pads provide a sustainable solution, lasting 3–5 years.
